Dakota’s 03 Dyna Superglide

I painted it the wrong color

I got this bike on a trade. I had finished paramedic school at the time and wanted to get back onto 2 wheels. I met with Jose from Ojai and he traded me straight across for this 03 Superglide with 30k miles on it. In exchange, he took my 01 Silverado Single Cab. It was cammed, 4L80 swapped, tuned, but needed love. I think it was a fair trade.

The bike was originally the anniversary edition color, whatever color that was. I thought it was luxury blue. It was not.

Myself and Matt (@fastpaintshop on instagram) had gotten an anniversary chin spoiler off of marketplace and painted it luxury blue along with the initial fairing that I had on the bike. It was immediately clear that it was not anywhere near the color of the bike. His initial idea was “fuck it, let’s just paint the bike all that same color” which I was happy to hear. Paint wasn’t expensive and we just trade labor back and forth.

I had gotten the good idea that we should just go all in and paint the bike from start to finish and have a helmet to match. Initially I had wanted to just do two tone with a midline split. Then it was to add pockets. And silver leaf. And spin the silver leaf. Also, let’s learn to pinstripe while we’re at it.

His mentor is Steve Deman from Kolor Kings. We had big shoes to fill. Also, it was my first time doing anything of this sort.

We started with just the chin spoiler, the original fairing, and a quarter fairing. I wanted to have some options in case I wanted to change things up. Then came the FXRT fairing, and leg warmers, and saddle bags. Just the whole thing and three different vibes in case I wanted to switch it up. Luxury blue would be the main color, broken up with pinstripe, spun silver leaf, pinstripe again, and states blue inside of the patterning.

I had gotten a newfound respect for painters after this. Painting is a whole lot of labor anyways before you get to the fun part of spraying color, but with the color changes, leaf, striping, clear, sometimes sanding and re-clearing. It was a newfound appreciation for painters, especially custom painters.

We wound up getting the bike stripped down to the bare frame, and painting everything just shy of two weeks. It was impressive to see it come together in such short notice.

During the months following, I wound up getting PSI Big Air Carburetor on another trade, 3D printing an adapter for it to work on the stock Dyna intake. I was also able to pick up a resin 3D printer and design and print a custom tail light with my logo inside of it. The headlight bucket is another unique 3D printed piece to adapt the FXRT fairing holes to hold a Chinese LP9 clone.

All in all, I’m ecstatic with the build. Will we win a best paint award? Maybe if no one with custom paint shows up. But it’s also meant to be a rider and if it get’s chips, cracks, dings, who cares.
